Freelancer or Agency? How to Choose for a Small Business Website
Compare communication, relevant work, scope, capacity and handover when choosing a freelancer or agency for your website.
Choose a provider whose evidence, scope and working process fit your project. Team size alone does not prove quality, value or the level of support you will receive.
Compare the working arrangement you are buying
A freelancer and an agency can both provide useful work. The better fit depends on the project, available capacity, communication and responsibilities. A larger team is not automatically safer, and a smaller team is not automatically better value.
First define the scope you need. Then ask each provider how they will deliver and support that work.
Know who you will work with
Ask who discusses requirements, prepares the design, builds the site and handles feedback. In a direct working arrangement, one person may cover several roles. In a team, ask how decisions move between people.
Neither structure is inherently a problem. You need a clear contact and a process that keeps your requirements from being lost.
Look for relevant evidence
Review work similar to the customer journey you need. Ask the provider to explain why pages were organised in a particular way and what they actually delivered.
An attractive image is useful for discussing visual direction, but it does not prove that the provider built the project or produced a sales result. Demonstrations should be labelled, and client metrics should have context that can be verified.
Compare capacity and scope
A small service website and a complex software product require different work. Ask whether the provider has capacity for your intended schedule and how dependencies such as content and approvals are handled.
For wider projects, find out how specialist tasks and continuity are covered. For limited projects, avoid paying for roles and features that do not serve the agreed goal.
Review costs without assuming motives
A price difference can reflect different deliverables, content assistance, review rounds or support. It does not by itself prove that one provider is padding fees or that another is cutting corners.
Use the proposal checklist to compare matching scope. Ask for recurring charges and extra-work terms in writing.
Clarify handover and support
Before choosing, confirm access, ownership arrangements, instructions and ongoing help. Ask how you report a problem and whether future changes have a separate price.
Do not assume a freelancer offers unlimited personal availability or that an agency includes continuous maintenance. Those commitments belong in the proposal.
A practical comparison table
| Criterion | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Communication | Who is my contact and when do we review progress? |
| Evidence | What relevant work can you explain and verify? |
| Scope | Which pages and functions are included? |
| Capacity | What does the schedule depend on? |
| Changes | How do we agree additional requests? |
| Continuity | What instructions and support follow launch? |
At Aura Logic, customers work directly with Jorge Luis Jaime. That is a working arrangement to assess against your needs, rather than a promise that one person suits every project.
Our business website service explains the starting scope and ranges. If you are ready to compare options, prepare a brief and discuss it with Jorge.
Frequently Addressed Technical Inquiries
Is a freelancer always cheaper than an agency? [+]
No. Compare deliverables, content assistance, support and recurring costs instead of assuming a price from the provider type.
What evidence should I ask to see? [+]
Ask for relevant work, an explanation of what was delivered and context for any claimed results. A demonstration should be identified as such.
What if my project needs several specialists? [+]
Ask how the proposed team and responsibilities cover those needs, and obtain a scope that reflects the actual work.
