Helping Buyers Plan with a Price Estimator
Self-qualifying website funnels, and how an interactive scope calculator lets buyers see fit and budget before they book.
A contact form asks people to trust you before they have any reason to. An interactive price estimator does the opposite: it lets a visitor work out what their project would cost, what it would include and whether it fits their budget, before they send you a single word.
The Contact Form That Costs You the Enquiry
For years, small websites have all used the same mechanism: a “Contact Us” page with empty fields (Name, Email, Company, Budget, Message).
To a visitor with real intent, that is an unnecessary obstacle:
- They have spent twenty minutes reading your site, your work and your prices.
- They are ready to judge whether you are a fit.
- Instead of an answer, they get a form that goes nowhere, then a wait of a day or two for a reply from a stranger.
Survey research on forms points the same way. Nielsen Norman Group’s form design guidance says to remove every field that can be derived somewhere else, collected at a later date, or simply left out. Baymard Institute’s 2024 checkout research found the average checkout flow still asks for 11.3 form fields when most sites need only 8, and that 17% of users have abandoned a purchase because of checkout complexity. When they hit an opaque form, high-intent visitors routinely close the tab and check a competitor who published something useful.
Traditional Inbound Friction:
Visitor Researches ──> Fills a Long Form ──> Waits Days ──> Discovery Call ──> Finally Sees Pricing
The Self-Qualifying Funnel (Aura Logic Approach):
Visitor Explores ──> Adjusts Scope Parameters ──> Sees Immediate Estimate ──> Sends Informed Enquiry
Why an Estimator Changes the Conversation
Interactive tools shift the psychology of an enquiry. When someone works through a calculator, three things happen:
- They stop reading and start deciding: they move from consuming your claims to configuring their own project, which makes the plan theirs rather than yours.
- They commit to a scope: by choosing between options, they have already decided what they want, and the project stops being abstract.
- They filter themselves out: visitors whose budget does not match your prices see that immediately and leave quietly, instead of booking a call you will waste.
We are not going to quote a conversion statistic for interactive content here, because we could not find one we could send you to check. What the estimator does is put the scope, the timeline and the budget in front of the visitor before they write a word to you.
For a small studio the effect is simple. Instead of forty enquiries, you get a short list of people who have already told you what they want and what they can pay.
How the Aura Logic Estimator Works
At Aura Logic, we built our own live Scope Estimator to replace the standard contact form, around four principles. It is there to help a buyer plan, not to close a sale.
// Project Scope Parameter Definition
export interface ProjectEstimate {
projectType: 'Business Website' | 'Online Store' | 'Custom Business Tool'
| 'Website Improvements' | 'Workflow Automation';
scale: '1-3 pages' | '4-7 pages' | '8-14 pages' | '15+ pages';
designLevel: 'editorial' | 'tactile' | 'spatial';
enquiryAssistant: 'none' | 'concierge' | 'search';
timeline: 'standard' | 'priority';
estimatedInvestmentBand: string;
}
1. Instant Parameter Feedback
As the visitor changes scope (choosing a store instead of a brochure site, adding an enquiry assistant, moving to a priority schedule), the investment band updates immediately, with no page reloads and no waiting on a server.
2. Zero-Hydration Host Layout
The estimator is an isolated island loaded with client:visible. The page around it, the header, the navigation and the footer ship as pure static HTML — Astro’s own documentation describes its components as HTML-only templating with no client-side runtime — which is what keeps the site scoring well on performance audits.
3. Pre-Filled Inbound Briefs
When the visitor decides to get in touch, their chosen scope, timeline and budget are compiled into a summary attached to their message. By the time you open it, most of the scoping is already done.
4. A Human Answer, Not an Autoresponder
The tool produces the first draft of the brief, not the final answer. Every estimate is reviewed by a person, and the price is confirmed after a short conversation about what the business actually needs. The calculator narrows the conversation. It does not replace it.
Generic Forms vs. Self-Qualifying Estimators
We publish no conversion benchmark of our own, because we have not run a controlled test, so the two measured rows below are the ones you fill in from your own data:
| Funnel Dimension | Generic “Contact Us” Form | Interactive Scope Estimator |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor-to-Inquiry Conversion Rate | Your baseline: enquiries per 1,000 visitors | The same count, four weeks after the estimator goes live |
| Average Sales Cycle Duration | Clock from first enquiry to signed scope | The same clock, with the scope agreed before the first call |
| Unqualified Enquiry Volume | High (no budget anchor) | Lower (self-filtered) |
| Visitor Perception of Technical Maturity | Standard agency commodity | A studio that knows what it does |
| First Meeting Quality | Basic introductory discovery | A conversation about the actual scope |
Building Your Own Scope Estimator
If you want to give visitors the same experience, work through these four stages.
Step 1: Codify Your Deliverable Matrix
Map your standard work into modular, transparent building blocks (a business website, an online store, a workflow automation, targeted improvements).
Step 2: Establish Honest Price Guardrails
Set the ranges from what you have actually delivered before, not from what you hope to charge. Buyers respect a clear range because it tells them you know your own costs. It also stops you spending a week quoting work you should not have taken.
Step 3: Keep the Calculator Lightweight
Build it with a small reactive framework (React, Solid.js, Preact) compiled inside static Astro components. Let it load only when needed, and never let it introduce layout shift or delay the first paint.
Step 4: Route the Result Where You Work
Send the calculated brief straight to wherever you actually read enquiries (email, a channel, a simple webhook) so the scope, timeline and budget arrive with the message instead of being retyped.
Conclusion: Let People Find Out Before They Ask
The old model assumed that hiding information protected you. It does the opposite. A visitor who cannot find out what things cost has to ask, and asking feels like work, so they ask fewer people.
By replacing a passive form with an interactive, parameter-driven estimate, you respect the visitor’s time, remove the low-intent noise, and start every real conversation with the important part already agreed.

Frequently Addressed Technical Inquiries
Why does an interactive estimator work better than a contact form? [+]
A contact form takes something away: the visitor's details go into a box and nothing comes back for a day or two. An estimator gives something away immediately. The visitor gets a real number for a real scope, and the useful conversation starts from there instead of from zero.
Does putting a price on your site scare away bigger clients? [+]
No. Hiding your prices behind a mandatory call says you are not confident in what you charge, and it costs the client a meeting before they can even find out. A published range does the opposite: it filters out the enquiries you could never have served well and lets serious buyers come in already informed.
How do you make a calculator that loads instantly? [+]
Build the calculator as a self-contained island inside an otherwise static page. The rest of the page ships as plain HTML with no JavaScript, and the calculator's own code only loads when it scrolls into view, so it cannot slow down the first impression.
